How personalisation works

Your visitors' actions never change the search index. Enrolling in a course, finishing a lesson or favouriting a post doesn't touch any record. Instead, SearchSync looks up each visitor's data when they load a search page and applies it to their search as it runs.

That keeps your index small and your content private, and means a change is reflected the next time the visitor searches, with no reindex.

There are two kinds of personal filtering:

  • Preferences narrow results to what the visitor wants to see, such as "only my favourites" or "only courses I'm enrolled in". They only ever change the visitor's own view, so they run in the browser.
  • Access control hides content a visitor isn't allowed to see, such as courses for a LearnDash group they're not in. This is enforced on the server, using Algolia secured API keys, Meilisearch tenant tokens or a database check on the Local backend, so it can't be bypassed from the browser.
note

Access control is off by default and is switched on per index by a developer. See Hooks and filters.
